Artist Statement
In my paintings, I seek to capture
the beauty in things that are
marginal,abandoned, ruined. To
me, traces of forgotten industries,
such as old buildings,
smokestacks, street signs, and
pre-modern machinery, are
inherently striking and physical,
markers to the overlooked realities of daily life. Drawing from my 15
years as a film scenic/designer, I use stencils and drywall joint
compound on panel to convert photoprints into bas-relief images
that transform mundane industrial elements into unexpected landmarks.
Telephone poles, overpasses, and cell phone towers become singular
icons, simplified by an experimental process that reduces details and
lends a sculptural quality to the work. Applied tones add warmth and
further enhance surface textures, at times echoing the patina of the
object shown.
When taking the initial photographs, I am drawn to man-made structures
in landscapes that possess strong silhouettes and geometric forms.
Seen from a low angle and framed against an empty sky, my central
subjects loom over the viewer, operating more as self-possessed
portraits than built environments. In the end, my work is about
immediacy and reviving a sense of place in the commonplace.
